Taylor Jacobs Sprained Toe In Scrimage
Taylor Jacobs sustained a sprained toe injury during Saturday's scrimmage against the Baltimore Ravens and the third-year wide receiver was expected to be sidelined this week in training camp.
Jacobs' injury occurred on a pass play early on during the scrimmage. He was carted off the field for further evaluation X-rays revealed no fracture. An MRI was scheduled for Sunday morning as a precautionary measure.
The 6-0, 202-pound Jacobs had been making a strong bid for increased playing time in training camp. In his first two NFL seasons, Jacobs has had a myriad of injuries, including an abdominal injury his rookie year.
Last season, Jacobs came on late in the year, finishing with 16 catches for 178 yards.
Another wide receiver, Darnerien McCants, was limited in Saturday's scrimmage due to a hand injury suffered during a recent training camp practice.
McCants was able to participate in special teams drills, but was held out of the rest of the scrimmage.
In other injury news, Shawn Springs sustained a mild hamstring injury and Garnell Wilds went down what appeared to be a knee injury late in the scrimmage. Wilds was able to walk gingerly off the field.
The Redskins are already thin at the cornerback position. Walt Harris (quad injury Artrell Hawkins (hamstring) and Carlos Rogers (ankle) also sat out the scrimmage.
Defensive end Renaldo Wynn was excused from the scrimmage due to a personal matter.
Taylor-Made
Sean Taylor picked up right where he left off last season with several key plays. The most notable came when Taylor broke up a certain touchdown pass to Ravens' wide receiver Randy Hymes.
"I saw him show up a few times, I'll say that," head coach Joe Gibbs said. "He has a way of doing that."
Added Gibbs: "Sean has been very professional. He has had a very good first week."
In the House
The official attendance count for the scrimmage was 35,517, a number that surprised even head coach Joe Gibbs. More than a few Redskins fans made the trip from Washington, D.C., for the scrimmage.
"My hat's off to all of the fans who were here," Gibbs said. "The dedication of the fans always impresses me. It goes to show the fan base that we have in the NFL."
The Redskins and Ravens will square off in another scrimmage in 2006, this time at FedExField.
