Houston Astros Baseball News and Notes

The Astros got a solid four innings from Roy Oswalt, and then took advantage of some heavy hitting to defeat the Indians, 11-5, in front of 4,270 at Chain of Lakes Park on Wednesday.

What started out as a pitchers' duel between Oswalt and right-hander Kyle Denney turned into anything but when, in the third, the Astros jumped on Denney for two runs. The last of those two runs scored on Adam Everett's solo homer.

Oswalt saw his advantage grow to 5-0 in the fourth, thanks to some defensive failings by the Indians.

To start things, Coco Crisp's misplay of Jason Lane's liner put a runner on third. Lane scored on Jose Vizcaino's groundout. Orlando Palmeiro followed with a fly ball into right-center that Crisp and Juan Gonzalez let drop for a single.

Brad Ausmus knocked in Palmeiro with a two-run homer off reliever Steve Watkins, who'd come on to replace Denney.

But in the bottom of the inning, the Astros saw their lead close to 5-2 on Gonzalez's two-run homer off Oswalt. But the game shot back to a five-run spread when the Astros scored twice off Watkins in the fifth.

Everett's single started the rally, and one out later, Morgan Ensberg lined a shot over the wall in left-center.

Even after Watkins left, the Astros continued to pound the baseball. They scored one run in the sixth and then added three in the seventh off right-hander Kaz Tadano. Justice B. Hill is a reporter for MLB.com.
