That's the ticket: Boston Celtics selling seats
10-04-2005 Boston Herald The NBA season has yet to blast off, but the Boston Celtic are already rocketing to the top of the league.
In season ticket sales, that is.
Boston is one of the top three teams in the league when it comes to season ticket sales, with a 95 percent renewal rate, a team executive said yesterday.
That puts the Celtics second only to the Chicago Bulls in this key fan and business barometer, noted Rich Gotham, a top Celtics marketing and corporate sponsorship executive.
The team also signed up 1,500 new season ticket holders, bringing the total close to 10,000 ’Äì double last year's take.
Gotham attributed the Celtics' ticket success to turnaround guru Doc Rivers and his work molding the team's mix of rising young talent and veteran performers.
The Celtics ownership group, led by local venture capitalist Wycliffe Grousbeck, also held prices steady, with the Celtics average ticket price staying even at $50.
``It wasn't a pricing driven thing,'' Gotham said. ``It was driven by the fans and their optimism about the team.''
Meanwhile, the team is also wooing fans with some aggressive offers on single-game tickets.
Along with discounts for college students, the Celtics front office is offering a $120 ticket package for a family of four that includes four hot dogs and four drinks. Some of the seats, which typically retail at $60, have been reduced to $30.
``We have had a good off season,'' Gotham said. ``It shows the fans have a good amount of excitement about the team going into the season.'
